In a report relating to health and air quality (August 2008), the OMS attests that “air pollution is the source of approximately two million premature deaths per year” and “requires that public authorities take measures at national, regional and even international levels”. Faced with these recommendations, the French ecology Ministry launched a “Particles plan” in 2008, providing a number of measures in several areas (industrial, agricultural, residential, transport, tertiary) in order to reduce particulate matter by 30% by 2015. This plan also calls on a scientific effort to improve knowledge about the measurement and modelling of pollution. The EVEN project, carried by company ECOLOGICSENSE, proposes to develop sensors of particles with low costs and to install them in dense network in the middle of Aix-en-Provence (strongly driving city on the subject). The P-AIR tool will provide short term real-time accurate area mapping through a modeling system, and provide medium-term support to decision making. It will allow to anticipate periods of high pollution by acting through prevention and implementing appropriate corrective actions to effectively reduce identified sources of particulate emissions.
